Indira
Gandhi Bharatiya Mahila Vikas Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana Ltd. (
IGBMVSSK) is a purely women's co-operative sugar factory not
only in India but the whole world. Our name has been recommended
to the Guinness Book of World Records by the Federation of Co-operative
Sugar Factories in the state of Maharashtra where more than one
third of our country's sugar production takes place.
IGBMVSSK is based on the policy on women declared by the Govt. of Maharashtra
on 22nd June 1994. For the first time in the long history of India,
right to property was given to women in the true sense. Our motto
as our name suggests is to ensure overall development of women
and children in the area.
IGBMVSSK is located at Tambale, in Bhudargad Taluka of Kolhapur district
in the state of Maharashtra. The site was selected as per the
norms laid down by the Government of India and with a view to
bring about a socio-economic transformation of the society especially
women and children. The area is one of the most undeveloped and
economically and socially backward falling in D+ zone. There is
nothing there which will come under the definition of infrastructure
that is to say no roads, no water, no electricity, needless to
say no buildings or communication facilities either. In the absence
of the above mentioned facilities the people are likely to remain
poor and ignorant even at the dawn of the 21st century. IGBMVSSK thus had to literally start from the scratch; construct roads,
get electricity, undertake work of water supply scheme, construct
living quarters for the workers and do just about every thing
to make the place hospitable
